The tissue lining the chest cavity, stomach cavity, heart cavity, and covering the organs therein, is called the mesothelium. A malignant (cancerous) tumor of the mesothelium is called a Malignant Mesothelioma or simply Mesothelioma.
Some tumors of the mesothelium can be benign (noncancerous) however most are malignant. These malignant mesothelioma are all treatable but the epithelioid type has the best prognosis. 50- 70% of malignant mesothelioma are this type. Then the mixed/ biphasic type makes up 20-35%, while the sarcomatoid type makes up 7-20%.
