mesothelioma information & research on asbestos lung cancer
When Asbestos Cancer or Mesothelioma occurs in the region of the lungs, it is referred to as Pleural Mesothelioma. It is actually the pleura (or tissue) lining the chest cavity and covering the lungs that is initially affected by the cancer.
Exposure to asbestos, most often as a workplace hazard, is the prime cause of Mesothelioma in the lung area. After asbestos fibers are inhaled they can cause damage to the mesothelial cells and this may result in cancer. The mesothelial cells cover the outer surface of most internal organs and line the chest cavity, the abdominal cavity, and the cavity around the heart.
Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma include shortness of breath, trouble swallowing, coughing, coughing up blood, pleural effusions (fluid build-up between the linings of the lungs and chest), weight loss, and even simply, flu-like symptoms. Over half the patients with asbestos cancer of the lungs experience lower back pain and pain at the side of the chest. Swelling of the face and arms are also symptomatic of Lung Mesothelioma.
Because the symptoms are quite generic and could lead one to believe that something else is occurring with their health, it is difficult to determine if Mesothelioma is indeed the culprit. But, because it is a very aggressive type of cancer it is best to treat it early on. Report any of these symptoms to a doctor, particularly if you have been exposed to asbestos.
Approximately three-fourths of Mesothelioma occurrences are Pleural, or chest cavity cancers. Although it would be a serious diagnosis for a person to face, mesothelioma treatments are available. As well, there are legal rights for those who have been victims of asbestos exposure in the workplace.
